Newsletter 31/10/2024
From the Principal:
Last Friday night the community of Our Lady of Mercy ate amazing foods, played games and activities, laughed, talked, and enjoyed each other’s company. In what was an outstanding community event our Fiesta on Goderich was a huge success not just for the money raised but for the community spirit that was so evident and articulated in the many comments made throughout the night. It was great to see so many of our local community come along to enjoy the fun and festivities.
A heartfelt thank you to our Parents and Friends group who coordinated a team of workers and organised donations to provide a wonderful night of fun and enjoyment for every person who walked through our school gates on Friday. We give special mention to all of our sponsors - your generosity made for a great community event.
I pass my thanks to all who assisted with the setup and preparations for the evening, as well as those parents who manned and donated items for our stalls. I also give thanks to all who cleaned up afterward.
This night was the epitome of what our community is about. We play together and we work together to provide for our students those little extras we otherwise would have to do without. There is no school that we would rather be a part of!

News From Kinder:
Our Kinder students have had a very busy start to Term 4.
On Thursday 24th October Lee from Bunnings visited to help the Kinder children with some gardening. Lee showed the children how to prepare the garden beds by turning the dry soil over and adding fertiliser. She then helped them plant carrot and onion seeds, as well as lettuce, beetroot and parsley seedlings. The children also helped build a climbing ladder for the onions and a net to protect the vegetables from the birds. Once all the vegetables were planted the children gave them some water. From Lee’s visit we now have new gardening gloves for all the children, gardening tools, watering cans and most importantly fresh garden beds filled with new vegetable seedlings!
Thank you Lee, we have all learnt a lot about gardening.
On Thursday 30th October Kinder students went on an excursion to Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary. They went on a tour around the park with wildlife ranger Harriet, who introduced them to Nini the Wombat and Manuka the Tasmanian Devil joey. The children were able to pat both Nini and Manuka. They learnt that Nini has a ‘deadly bottom’ which can be used to protect herself against predators, and that Manuka was the size of a grain of rice when first born! They were also given pellets and were able to hand feed the kangaroos and joeys. who were so cute! After the tour the children explored the rest of the park where they saw Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagles, owls, spotted quolls, echidnas and more. The excursion was finished with a picnic lunch outside in the sunshine before a relaxing bus ride back to school.
It was a great day out!
